Electric vehicles with their type of drive are a new challenge for the operators of venues, trade fairs, film studios and many more.
A fire in the traction battery of an electric vehicle is currently difficult to control, as the high-voltage battery (lithium-ion technology) is in a closed housing and extinguishing water cannot penetrate the battery to reduce the thermal reaction through cooling.

The variant often shown in the media of a huge fire department container filled with several thousand liters of water, in which the burning vehicle is "submerged" to cool down, is not an option in the area of film productions, events, exhibitions and presentations.

This is exactly where the RFC Battery extinguishing system from Rosenbauer opens up new possibilities for firefighting traction batteries in electric vehicles.

The battery extinguishing system consists of a hollow mandrel (extinguishing mandrel) which is pneumatically driven into the battery at very high pressure. After penetrating (piercing) the battery, extinguishing water is immediately supplied and can thus interrupt the thermal reaction by cooling. The extinguishing water requirement here is only approx. 100-200 liters.
At the same time, the development and escape of hazardous fumes is reduced.

When motor vehicles are exhibited in enclosed spaces or "played on" in film studios, special safety measures are required - especially in terms of preventive fire protection.
One important aspect in this context is inerting:
By supplying so-called inert gases, the oxygen content in the vehicle tank is lowered to a level that minimizes the risk of combustion reactions.

Hazards in vehicle tanks

Explosive mixtures can form in fuel tanks. The presence of oxygen in particular poses a significant safety risk: The literal "spark" is enough to cause an explosion. The most important countermeasure is so-called inerting.

The inerting

The inerting of fuel tanks is carried out as a preventive fire and explosion protection measure according to BetrVO, 11. GPSGV, TRBS and MVstättVO, for exhibition purposes of motor vehicles in closed rooms. A gas cushion of inert gas is applied over a flammable liquid, thus preventing the formation of an explosive atmosphere (avoidance of the explosion triangle: "Beschleierung").
This gas cushion has a maximum duration of 72 hours.

The vehicles must not be moved after the inerting process.

Furthermore, it is advisable to cut off the power supply to the vehicles on display by removing the battery in order to prevent ignition sparks.
