The Fireworkers of Malta

The film portrays two rivaling groups of fire workers in Malta. They combine Italian-Arab temperament and catholic religion to celebrate every weekend from June to October the patron saint of a village with three kinds of self manufactures fireworks: The “kaxxa internali” produces a noisy spectacle in daylight, followed by colorful fireworks at night, and finally the Maltese specialty, the “Catherine Wheels” – huge ground fireworks set up like a magic forest. Benny Farrugia, 54, one of the best fire workers of Malta, who lost both his legs below the knees at an accident, works for the Club of the “Lady of the Lilies” in his home town Mqabba, where another accident recently destroyed a lot of the annual output of shells and rockets. The hobby-pyrotechnicians feast, while their rivals of the “Santa Marija Club” speed up their production for their annual show. The film follows both groups as they live out their passion producing and setting up fireworks, as the whole town assists in the provocation of their rivals, and when trey fore off their colorful shells and celebrate
