A Gesheft is the first film in 60 years completely in Yiddish from beginning to end. The film was originally produced for Orthodox Jewish audiences. Written, directed and acted by “black hat” Orthodox Jews from Monsey, New York, it presents the truest picture of life in the Orthodox community. A wheeler dealer straddles his Orthodox Jewish background and what he calls “the real world.” There are high-speed car chases, bribery, break-ins and scenes about Jewish ethics and perspective.
Peretz, a “fallen” Chassidic Jew turns to a life of wheeling and dealing. His partners in crime are Yiddish-speaking tough-guys who speak their own Yiddish slang. But, Peretz’s life takes a turn back “up” when he is arrested for kidnapping his former Yeshiva schoolmate, Wolf. There are no female actors or voices as dictated by Orthodox Jewish law but it is all about sin and temptation. This is a unique film that offers insight into a private religious world.
