Brief synopsis

He is currently Germany's most successful swimmer: Florian Wellbrock - Olympic champion in open water, world and European champion, record holder, Bambi winner. The new star of the recently weakening German swimmers. With his wife Sarah - also a medal winner in Tokyo - he forms what many call the dream couple of German swimming.

How did the son of a bicycle dealer from Bremen manage to do what no other German swimmer had managed for decades? His unstoppable path to the top of the world is characterized by an ambitious coach, a down-to-earth family and a devastating stroke of fate in his childhood. When he was nine years old, his sister, who was four years older than him, died on the edge of the pool after taking part in a swimming competition. The why remains unclear. This is one of the reasons why he has his life motto tattooed on his chest, a quote from a Sido song: "Enjoy your life all the time, you're dead longer than you're alive."

Wellbrock enjoys swimming. Water is his world, a "dream world", he calls it. He subordinates everything to competitive sport. After his success in Tokyo 2021, gold in the open water and bronze in the 1,500 meters in the pool, he is now fully focused on the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris. Wellbrock has not had enough yet and has something to make up for: He also wants to win gold in the pool - as he did at the 2019 World Championships.

The Sportclub story "Florian Wellbrock - the gold swimmer" gives insights into the everyday life of a top athlete that are rarely seen - from private impressions from Magdeburg to Bremen, to the daily work with national coach Bernd Berkhahn, who has shaped Wellbrock into a top swimmer. The Sportclub Story shows the 24-year-old exceptional athlete as he prepares for his big goal and accompanies him to the altitude training camp in the Spanish Sierra Nevada - portraying a remarkably ambitious and determined athlete.
