1871, Westphalia. The Prussian soldier Gustav stops at an inn on his way back from victory in the Franco-Prussian War. The landlady Clara reacts reservedly to the Prussians' joy. She is critical of the Prussian authorities and makes no secret of her dislike. Gustav and Clara get into conversation, discuss the events and argue about the past years of Prussian history in Westphalia.
