There are about 47,000 alternative practitioners in Germany. They enjoy great popularity because their methods are considered by many to be "gentle" and "natural". But: There are no binding standards for the training of alternative practitioners. Unlike doctors, non-medical practitioners complete a narrow-gauge training, and as a rule they do not see a single patient. A secondary school leaving certificate is sufficient for admission, the prospective non-medical practitioners only have to pass an examination at the public health department, which includes a multiple choice test and an oral examination. They are not tested at all on the naturopathic and other alternative methods that they will later use in their practices.
