    Brief synopsis

It is the first city north of the Alps, its inhabitants were prosperous, its elites rich - and they were female. At Heuneburg Castle in southwestern Germany, powerful women stood at the top of Celtic society some 2600 years ago. With its distinctive culture and highly developed social structure, the settlement centre was famous far beyond the borders of the Celtic Empire.

Recent archaeological finds in the vicinity of Heuneburg Castle manifest the outstanding position of female representatives of Celtic society. Women determined public life and participated in political power. Celtic society was thus far ahead of Greek and Roman society.
