The two-part documentary film Decadence – the desire for pleasure and decay chronicles decadence as an aesthetic and social phenomenon through historic portraits and contemporary history. In the process, it reveals decadence to be a new battle cry of the cultures. Extreme populists and fanatic Islamists attack the depravity of the Western lifestyle, predicting its demise. Opposed to them are enlightened contemporaries who refer to the global divide between rich and poor as decadent, and fear the decline of civilisation.
