‚Seven Years of Winter‘ is set four years after the MCA in Chernobyl, while Ukraine is struggling with the collapse of the Soviet Union, crime rates are rising and desperation sickens the population.
Andrej is a calm, obedient boy with a pure soul, who was born into the depravity of a post-soviet era which he could never even begin to understand. While no man brings up the courage to enter the restricted area around the power plant, Andrej welcomes the absence of humanity. The reason why all the people are so afraid of the zone is simply incomprehensable for the young mind of his. This circumstance makes Andrej an easy target for Artjom‘s relentless exploitations.
Artjom sends the simple-hearted boy into the zone to collect passports, papers and everything of value to sell on the black market. On Andrej‘s raids through the deserted apartments he is reimagining himself amidst the families who used to live there. By looking at the photographs on the walls, he tries to fill the gap his dead parents left in his heart. In his imagination he instantly becomes a member of the families he only knows from the photos and who are long gone.
These illusions heal and repair Andrejs wounded soul,
while the radiation crumbles his body.
