Jack meets Em one day after school when the two children are left behind. Em seeks Jack's help, afraid she has been forgotten, but is intimidated by the older boy's apathy. Jack then leaves the school grounds, and shows himself to be a child who, unlike Em, is beginning to feel independent from parental supervision. But when he is caught spying on a nearby act of adultery, Jack's sense of self-guidance is challenged by the reprimand of a father, whose efforts to correct the boy are confused with those to validate his own behavior.
