The story of my grandmother’s life continues from Finding a Place to Sleep. When she was 19, she was taken from her family in urban Ukraine to rural Germany to do forced labour during World War II. There she met my grandfather, who was also from Ukraine. The film’s audio weaves together interviews with my grandmother (who talks about funny things like learning how to milk a cow as well as difficult things like not being able to write home) and my voice-over with the ambient sounds of the Bavarian countryside. The film’s visuals will be a montage of hand-processed black & white film, colour film, photographs and official documents. I combine hand-processed celluloid film with non-sync interviews to create an illusion of deeper intimacy through the hand-touch aesthetic of hand-developed film and the acousmatic effect of the disembodied voice.
