What does it mean to live in another country?
Husseyin comes to West Berlin from Turkey, climbs the stairs of the subway stations, looks uncertainly and yet curiously along the facades of the buildings. But the new environment despises him, doesn't give him a home between monotonous work at a punch press, stairwell chatter and everyday racisms.
Sohrab Shahid Saless' first film shot in Germany gives insight into the condition of a person who leaves his home and is condemned to remain a seeker. The film allows us to sense a social climate in the FRG whose after-effects are still visible today.
PROVOBIS is committed to digitizing all of Sohrab Shahid Saless' films that it has produced. The film edition of Saless' complete works is the result of an initiative by film historian and curator Vivien Buchhorn and is published by her together with the Goethe-Institut. The digitization of the film IN DER FREMDE was funded by the Film Heritage funding program of the BKM, the Länder and the FFA.
