About Ludwig Blochberger

Ludwig Blochberger was born in 1982 in East-Berlin. He spent his early childhood in Dresden in the former German Democratic Republic. After the fall of the wall the family moved to Vienna due to a theater engagement of his father (actor and director Lutz Blochberger) at the Wiener Burgtheater. From 1992 until 1995 he was a member of the famous Vienna Boys' Choir and went to perform with them worldwide. In 1998 director Claus Peymann cast him in the stage play "Edward II” where he played the young Prince Edward III alongside Thomas Thieme at the Wiener Burgtheater. Around that time Blochberger also had his screen acting debut and appeared in the TV movie "Wie eine schwarze Möwe” (Like a black Seagull), playing the favorite brother of the Empress Elisabeth of Austria. Just before the millennium the family moved back to Berlin. In the Emmy Award winning docudrama-miniseries "The Manns - Novel of a Century” directed by Heinrich Breloer he played Klaus Heuser alongside Armin Mueller-Stahl. The following year he quitted school and began to study at the Ernst Busch Academy of Dramatic Arts being only 18 years old. During his studies he was filming for the coming-of-age movie "Summer Storm” (2003) dealing with issues around sexual orientation, directed by Marco Kreuzpaintner; the Oscar-winning film "The Lives of Others” (2004) directed by Florian Henckel von Donnersmark and "Der Vater meiner Schwester” (The Father of my Sister), a family drama in which Blochberger starred together with Katharina Schüttler and Christian Berkel. It premiered at the Munich Film Festival and earned him an Undine Award nomination for Best Young Actor (TV). In 2005 he completed his acting studies and worked in three episodes of "Tatort” (Crime Scene). In the movie "The Last Train”, directed by Joseph Vilsmaier & Dana Vávrová, he played the unscrupulous SS-Obersturmführer Crewes who escorted one of the last deportation trains from Berlin to Auschwitz. 2007 Blochberger was already part of the cast for the action film "Stopping Power” directed by Jan de Bont where he was supposed to hunt John Cusack in "the longest car chase in movie history". The production had to be stopped 3 days prior filming following a bankruptcy. The German casting agent Simone Bär, who oversaw both projects quickly arranged an audition with director Stephan Daldry and Blochberger was still able to take part in the production of the Oscar-winning movie "The Reader”. Early the same year he took on the leading role in the world premiere of "Heil Hitler!” by playwright Rolf Hochhuth directed by his father Lutz Blochberger. Blochberger worked closely with the director Hans Neuenfels for many years, in the title role of "Baal” (2007) by playwright Bertolt Brecht at the Munich Volkstheater or most recently at the Vienna State Opera in "The Abduction from the Seraglio” (2020-2024). The Italien film director Liliana Cavani cast him as Pope Innocent III in in her film adaptation "Francesco” (2013). Furthermore he portrayed the former German Chancellor Helmut Schmidt in the TV documentary drama "Helmut Schmidt - Questions of Life” directed by Ben von Grafenstein. From 2013 to 2015, Blochberger starred as Riwal in the German crime series "Inspector Dupin”, based on the novels by author Jean-Luc Bannalec which were filmed in Brittany (France). He then starred in the crime series "The Old Fox” as commissioner Tom Kupfer from 2015 to 2021. In "The End of Dreams” (2023) directed by Olga Chajdas he was playing the commandant of the Auschwitz concentration camp, Rudolf Höss. The docudrama series was filmed at the original location in Poland. Since 2024 he is performing with a solo concert reading of "The Book of Those Killed by Neil Young” by Navid Kermani where he sings and plays songs by Neil Young live on guitar.

Blochberger is father of a Portuguese-German son, born in 2021.
He is a three time Berlin Marathon finisher.
