A watercolour painting with a koi carp? No, a puddle with a coin, the intrusive protagonist of "Coins"! Even the opening image shows that Nikolai Huber does not shoot everyday pictures. In a macro perspective at "eye level" with the coin, the storyline takes us into entirely unfamiliar perspectives with artistic camera movements that irritate us, making us almost physically grasp the protagonist's phobia. Nikolai Huber's outstanding camerawork has inspired the jury of the German Camera Award!
About Nikolai Huber
Nikolai Huber is a director of photography based in Germany. His cinematographic work focuses on features and documentary films.
He started working as a camera operator and lighting technician at the Munich Kammerspiele Theatre and as a visual effects artist at Trixter. In 2014, he began his camera studies at the University of Television and Film Munich and has shot multiple fictional as well as documentary films, many of them awarded on international film festivals.
For „Find Fix Finish", Nikolai Huber received a special mention by the Jury for best Cinematography at the 2017 Camerimage International Film Festival, his work for "The Raft” was nominated for best Cinematography at the German Camera Award 2020.
In addition to his work as a cinematographer, Nikolai Huber works as a Cameraoperator, Visual Effects Artist and DIT for internationally acclaimed productions such as James Franco's "Future World", Ivan Tverdovsky's "Jump Man" and Werner Herzog's "Fireball”. He is frequently working as Lead Compositor at Film SRL in Venezia where he's heavily involved in the development of emerging technologies and interdepartmental workflows for visual effects and virtual productions.
