At one time, Carolinensiel was the second most important harbour on the East Frisian coast. It was from here that freight sailing vessels sailed to the Mediterranean and even across the Atlantic. Nowadays, the village counts on tourism: the villagers are united in their efforts and develop new ideas in order to stand out from other competitors along the coast.
Their concept is successful: the number of tourists has increased in recent years, with almost 180,000 holidaymakers in 2018. The highlight of the year is the “WattenSail”, when sailors from the entire North Sea coast devoted to historical tradition meet in the museum harbour, an event in which the whole village community is involved. The report tells about people who live along the edge of the harbour out of passion and shape the future of their village with great foresight.
