Xavier de Maistre is a fighter, a seeker, almost an obsessive in his quest to establish the harp as a solo instrument in today's concert world. For it is more than just a shiny gold instrument in the orchestral apparatus or a beautiful-looking accompanying instrument. It is a serious solo instrument that can masterfully play works from all musical epochs.
The musical thread of "Xavier de Masitre and the Harp" is the concert in the concert barn of the Hasselburg Cultural Estate. As part of the Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival, Xavier de Maistre will perform the Concertino op. 34 by the British composer Elias Parish-Alvars with the Mahler Chamber Orchestra.
Elegantly interwoven with the concert, the viewer is taken on a documentary journey with Xavier de Maistre: we see him rowing, his recreational sport, on the Mediterranean; accompany him on a tour of the Museo dell'Arpa Victor Salvi in Piasco, northern Italy; are present at rehearsals with his students at the Hamburg Musikhochschule; and even when Xavier de Maistre receives the long-awaited new cobalt blue harp from the USA at the Salvi Harp Manufactory.
