    Brief synopsis

Pablo Picasso spent his youth in Barcelona, the capital of Catalonia, at the turn of the century. It was a style-defining era both for the up-and-coming cultural metropolis and for the young artist. The documentary follows his footsteps and finds many motifs that he immortalized in his paintings: Barcelona Cathedral as well as the red light district, but also the mountain landscape Terra Alta further south in Catalonia.

Pablo Picasso spent his youth in Barcelona, the capital of Catalonia. The turn from the 19th to the 20th century was a style-defining epoch - both for the up-and-coming cultural metropolis and for the young artist. The documentary follows Picasso's footsteps and presents numerous motifs immortalized in his paintings: Barcelona Cathedral, the red light district and the Terra Alta mountain landscape further south in Catalonia. In 1917 he painted his last view of Barcelona. It is the view of the Column of Columbus at the harbor. Picasso has long since become a famous painter and enjoys the artist's life in France. But Barcelona will always play an important role in his life and remind him of his beginnings. The Museu Picasso is an expression of his close ties with Barcelona; the painter made it possible by donating his early works. Art historian Claustre Rafart works there. For her, Picasso is a city guide through the Barcelona of his time. With the help of old photographs, she explores the concrete motifs in his paintings. Originally from Málaga, the Picassos move to the old town - near the harbor. Since then, the beach of La Barceloneta has visibly changed. The neighborhood's centuries-old fishing tradition is increasingly being displaced by party tourism. But a few fishermen like Rafael Aguilera and Paco Sanchez still exist in Barcelona. Barcelona's architectural monuments also caught Picasso's attention during his forays into the old city. Especially the courtyard of the Gothic cathedral. For centuries it has been inhabited by geese. According to tradition, there must be exactly 13 of them.
