At a mixing competition in Cairo, DJ Skaarab (AKA Samir) gets the opportunity of his career when he wins a dream trip to Belgium to participate in a prestigious championship. His plans are thwarted when, during his travels, a strike reroutes his plane to Luxembourg and he must finish the journey by land. His travels become even more complicated when Samir loses his papers and is detained by authorities who mistake him for a refugee. Determined to clear his name and get to Belgium, Samir tries to navigate an unknown country, culture, and language, meeting an eclectic cast of characters along the way. Adolf El Assal’s second feature film, Sawah is an energetic and entertaining comedy that appeals to an inclusive international ethos in a time of increasingly insular nationalisms.
