Brief synopsis
Fremd bin ich eingezogen, fremd'ich wieder aus zieh'... The motto of Franz Schubert's "Winterreise" accompanies the itinerant photographer Friedrich Pöhler during a dramatic phase of his life, when in 1909 he fails in his attempt to settle in the Pietist Brethren community of Wilhelmsdorf in Upper Swabia. The film tells of the life of the pious Wilhelmsdorfers and the farmers and craftsmen in the neighboring Catholic villages as a conflict between a narrow pietist morality and the harsh village reality, which comes to a head in the unhappy love between the wander-weary photographer and the pub waitress Anna Limpert, who has been cast out of Wilhelmsdorf.
