There seems to be no end to the SUV boom. On the contrary, more than a hundred different models are now thronging the German market in countless different classes. Today, one in three new privately owned cars belongs to this segment.

The SUV Story 2018 follows first-hand the development of the Porsche Cayenne E-Hybrid, accompanies the new Jeep Wrangler – “the mother of all off-road vehicles – on its maiden trip in the Alps and explains the innovative hydrogen-powered SUV by Hyundai, the Nexo. In addition, n-tv tells the incredible story of the Skoda Trekka, which caused quite a commotion in New Zealand and on the island of Samoa way back in the 1960s – long before today’s SUV offensive by the Czech carmakers. Off into the terrain! – At the Toyota Land Cruiser driving school, viewers are playfully taught how to jockey their two-tonne off-road vehicles safely through water, mud, rocks and boulders. The report also presents the fastest, the most luxurious and what is probably the most unusual SUV. Furthermore, the on- and off-road film trip takes us to Sweden, England and France – including a world record, the “Car of the Year and “Electro-Darlings.
