As my life has been fairly turbulent, I prefer playing roles of psychologically loaded characters, Despite my advanced age I do not really embody that type of homey Grandad, people keep telling me, but rather the type of a traditional rocker, charismatic gentleman or authoritarian boss, but with a diverse choice of mindsets that develop in the course of a lifetime. Due to my personal history I feel very much at ease in the roles of the typical teacher or blue collar working class man.
As I have a comic talent I am also very good at playing the typical German.
I live in modern Germany and I know exactly what modern Germany is like these days.
When I identify with this character, I am "Manfred" and "Manfred" is convinced that the old clichés are dead and that it’s time for new ones. Germany has changed and so have the topics. Self-deprication is out and the 21st century German does have a sense of humour ... although often at his own expense.
Don’t ask for his personal opinion!! He is not allowed to have any, like almost all Germans these days. He knows he MUST BE politically correct in post-war Europe. And he is! In public! He’s absolutely sure that the old stereotypes do not apply to him any more. And they don’t – at first sight.
In private I had been a teacher of English and Geography, till I retired in 2016. I love British humour and film, but also appreciate modern German comedy, cabaret and drama. My English is consequently as good as perfect, but I can also put on a strong "Sherman eccent iff ze British fill more et ease viz it".
I used to play musical and drama or sing rock ‘n’ roll on stage. And I still perform comedy and cabaret in Germany. I also performed on British stages. Reactions at the Komedia in Brighton, the Red Rose Comedy Club and the Plough Inn in London showed that my jokes were unfamiliar and left the audience with an unusual kind of hilarity.
After my retirement I had very intensive acting training with the best teachers I could get (e.g. Dieter Trayer and Ivana Chubbock), and also in London (with Bernard Hiller and Caster Dan Hubbard). Since then I could be seen in various films and commercials. I fancy comic roles (like the ones of John Cleese), but also tragic and profound settings like in the films with Robert Carlisle, Anthony Hopkins and Robert de Niro.
