  • Award winner: best children's and young people's audio book 2022 Hr2
    THE SEA AHEAD
    -Alan Gratz

Three young people, three decades, one hope: ANKOMMEN.
Three gripping and moving stories of escape from 1939, 1994 and 2015.

On February 5, 2023, the award ceremony of the "KIWI - Children's Audiobook Award of the State Capital Wiesbaden" will take place. This prize is endowed with 10,000 euros and will be awarded at the start of the hr2-Hörfest Wiesbaden on Sunday, February 5, 2023, in hr2-kultur as part of a varied radio program.

Moving stories of escape from the 20th century
In the Children's and Young People's Audio Book of the Year 2022, author Alan Gratz intertwines three stories of escape from the years 1939, 1994 and 2015. In each case, he focuses on a child: 11-year-old Josef flees Germany to escape the Nazis, Isabel leaves her native Cuba with her family because she is starving, and 12-year-old Mahmoud wants to escape the bombs in Syria.

According to the jury of the hr2 best audiobook list, the audiobook gives children a true-to-life understanding of what it means to be on the run. According to the jury, Lena Conrad, Omid-Paul Eftekhari and Benedikt Paulun make the narration very lively with their interpretations. According to the jury, "an exciting, moving and extremely important audiobook."

  • Premiere WHAT YOU HEAR IN THE DARK, Elina Finkel
What you hear in the dark

    Commissioned work by Andriy Bondarenko
translated from Ukrainian by Lydia Nagel
    World premiere
    Premiere on March 18, 2023Studio

Due to Russian missile attacks, Ukrainian cities are plunged into darkness and cold. But life goes on even under such circumstances. In "What you hear in the dark" A. Bondarenko tells about the residents of a prefabricated building, who catch the almost daily blackouts in different situations. What do people who live in darkness and cold under the constant threat of missile attacks and a nuclear strike think about? What do they talk about? When the lights go out and the lines between life and death blur, most strange and unexpected things can happen.
"How will we remember those days? Who knows what we will remember from them. The pillars of smoke in the sky or the evenings by candlelight? We make jokes, talk about the weather, drink beer and wine, congratulate on birthdays, do our work, take out the garbage, greet the neighbors. We live normal lives under abnormal conditions..."
Surprisingly humorous and almost poetic, Bondarenko tells of the horrors of war. He goes not to the front lines, but to people's homes, to everyday heroes. They are heroes simply because they manage to survive, not to despair and never give up hope.

The writing commission was made possible by a grant from the Special Fund in favor of artists affected by the Ukraine war of the Ministry of Science, Research and Culture of the State of Brandenburg.
