A TV documentary is being produced about the resistance fighter Irene Harand and her desperate attempts to prevent the “Anschluss” of Austria to Nazi Germany. It is written and directed by Andreas Gruber. The film will consist of three formally and clearly defined elements. Irene Harand will be played by Julia Stemberger, who will recreate a TV interview with Irene Harand. Formally the recordings of the interviews will be designed so that it could be believed that it is genuine interview material from that period. Irene Harand was one of the most important fighters against Antisemitism, against the Nazis and for an independent Austria in Vienna between 1930 and 1938. Her story went untold during the postwar years in Austria and is therefore hardly known in Austria. Her desperately great aim: to warn the world about Hitler, or to at least save Austria. That came at a high price. Irene Harand survived by sheer luck but did not return to Austria. In this documentary those who fought alongside her and surviving eyewitnesses talk about her, as well as historians and political scientists.
