Old customs and new events combine on the feast of St. Martin. The German folklorist and Germanist Karl Meisen (1891-1973) said that he differed "from other folkloristic saints, as with him folklore does not only arise from the legendary tradition, as can be more or less clearly observed with some other saintly figures, but in many apparitions it is also linked to events in his life. Martin customs are numerous, diverse and international. The most important elements are drinking and eating, fire and light, panting and wandering.
