‘Exceptional Talent’ takes place in the Paris region in 2017 and follows three characters who are related only by circumstance. Their talents and skills are extraordinary in all senses, and therefore France has enabled them to express themselves fully within French territory, culture and language. However, they are stripped of any alternative when the legal possibility to stay in the country is brutally and suddenly revoked, and any adequate alternative does not allow them to be employed without entering familiar patterns. The new situation confronts them not only with the shame and fear of the place they call home, but also with their identities, rejected as “talented” by the authorities for the same reason they were embraced in the first place. Each of them collects advice of various kinds and chooses to operate a survival mechanism that suits her place in French society, in order to remain there.
