Every year on the last Friday in August, two tonnes of fireworks go up in smoke in Grömitz. A ten-kilometre system of fuses, some 10,000 effects and more than 50,000 visitors stretch the local community to its limits. “The Baltic in Flames” is one of the most explosive spectacles in the North.
From star bursts through golden cascades to water bombs – the programme “Die Nordreportage” watches pyrotechnicians as they assemble and tweak their hazardous devices, looks over the shoulders of the tense organisers, and joins spectators in admiring the elaborately composed work of art high above the Baltic.
