Whether chicken, sheep or spectacled bears - the 1950s were the dawn of peculiar times for the animals of the GDR. The young republic wanted to create a new socialist human, and animals were also put at the service of this vision. The dog Laika was send into space. A socialist animal world is created at the zoo in Berlin-Friedrichsfeld. Agriculture is collectivised and mass animal husbandry is decreed. Small animals are used for socialist education and, to obtain foreign currency, pedigree animals were brought across the border for urgently needed Western money.
