As Germany's first musical series, the musical series "Dancing in the Shadow" is intended to encourage greater tolerance, openness and inclusion in society by depicting the realities of life for different characters who are all connected by their love of dance.
The series centers on six characters of different genders, origins, sexualities and backgrounds, who alternate in the episodes: Sara is just starting her studies at university. She manages well in her daily life with her visual impairment and doesn't want to let her dream of being able to dance one day be taken away from her. Amateur photographer Andrew, who is always critical of Hera's extreme feminist views, encourages her, while wannabe macho Chris just laughs at Sara's efforts. Never would Chris admit that he himself would like to dance. At least until he meets Alice, who is training in the girls' hip-hop dance group for DancingBash, the big dance competition in Ilmenau. Little does he know that Alice leads a double life and as Alex not only dances in the boys' dance group, but is also Bruce's best friend, whom Chris is only too happy to bully. In the course of the story, the characters, all students at Ilmenau Technical University, have to learn to deal with prejudices and failures, to question their identities and values again and again, and to realize what it means when one's own worldview is shaken by an encounter with other people, and how to reassemble it piece by piece.
