Company history | Bavaria Fiction GmbH was founded in 2007 as Bavaria Fernsehproduktion GmbH. The company was formed following the transformation of Bavaria Film GmbH into a holding company and the separation of its production division into an independent subsidiary. That same year ZDF Studios GmbH became a stakeholder in Bavaria Fernsehproduktion, acquiring 49% of the available shares. The company was renamed Bavaria Fiction GmbH in October 2017. For more than ten years the company has been producing a full range of fiction formats, from daily and weekly series to TV movies and lavish event productions. The company's portfolio has been constantly extended since its formation - in addition to the numerous series launched by Bavaria Film, The Rosenheim Cops (since 2001), Storm of Love (since 2005) and the movie collections Tatort: München (since 1989) and Inga Lindström (since 2003), numerous episodes of Polizeiruf 110 (since 2008) have been produced by the company’s Munich-based department, while the series SOKO Stuttgart (since 2009) has been made in Stuttgart. In addition to the large number of television movies, the company has also created many event specials including Dark Woods (2020). In 2014 the Bavaria Film subsidiary Colonia Media was taken over, which has continued to operate as the company’s Cologne department. As a result productions of the long-running series Tatort from Cologne, Münster and Dortmund are now well established movies of the company's portfolio, alongside the series Rentnercops and the crime series Dengler (both since 2014). Since 2016 the company has also operated from a fourth location in Berlin. 2016 also saw the creation of a separate department for international series which has produced high end series such as Das Boot, Arctic Circle and Freud. |
