Territorio de Zaguates ("country of strays") is a unique dog home situated in the mountains of the province Heredia in Costa Rica. Over one thousand dogs live on the 370 acre piece of land – in the fresh air, without cages. All of them have been abandoned by their owners and left to fend for themselves. Lya Ballte and her husband Alvaro Saumet have rescued many thousands of dogs from a life on the streets of Costa Rica young or old, healthy or sick, none are sent away, all are taken care of until a new loving home can be found.
