Wanda Rutkiewicz was the first woman in history on K2 - the world most difficult mountain and the first Polish climber on Everest. In 1992 Wanda did not come back from an expedition and there is no proof of her death. Today Wanda would be 75 years old. We set off on our expedition to trace Wanda’s footsteps along her last journey to Nepal. Who was she and how did she convince herself and others of her immortality? Was she a conqueror of the highest peaks, or a fugitive for whom mountains were the last safe place, where she could hide from envy of the climbing community and her loneliness?
Eliza Kubarska reveals conversations with several international celebrities of the mountain community: Reinhold Messner, Krzysztof Wielicki, Carlos Carsolio and Kurt Diemberger as well as Elizabeth Hawley, an outstanding chronicler of Himalayan expeditions. She also speaks to people from outside the community but key in Wanda's life, including sister Janina Fies and friends Ewa Matuszewska and Marion Feik. The testimonium that unfolds shows a tragic biography of a great climber full of misfortunes and great achievements. It probes the mystery that surrounded her and answers many uncomfortable questions. The film will feature previously unpublished Polish and foreign archives, revealing, among others, the fact that Rutkiewicz was a very good filmmaker. The frame of the story is Eliza's journey in the footsteps of Wanda to the farthest corners of the Himalayas...
