Justine and Richard have three children.
After living together for fifteen years, Justine splits up with Richard. He moves into another apartment and accepts a job overseas.
The separation period is steeped in the inertia caused by their past together and an uncertain future apart. The couple is assailed by memories and past events. Richard reconnects with a 17-year-old son from a previous relationship. Justine recalls how her father abandoned the family, her first disappointments in love and when she and Richard first met.
Christmas looms and a year has gone by since they last saw each other. Justine and the children still live in the same neighborhood and in the same building where Richard happens by one night.
