Walter Alvarez is a medical practitioner and a Kallawaya. He is also the President of the Bolivian Society of Traditional Medicine, an association of physicians who practice traditional herbal medicine. After studying medicine in Cuba, Walter returned to his home country Bolivia. His Kallawaya ancestors have wandered throughout the Andes using natural remedies to heal the sick since the times of the Inca Empire. With Walter, we discover how complementary medicine is practiced in the Andes in the 21st century. In his medical practice in La Paz, he combines conventional western medicine and alternative natural medication. Healing plants and herbs, and a healthy, varied and balanced diet constitute the foundation of traditional Kallawaya medicine which focuses on preventing illness, not just curing it. As a member of parliament Walter has fought for recognition of traditional medicine and its contribution to contemporary integrative medicine in Bolivia. For he believes that only the combination of both types of medicine can help us lead a healthy life.
