Kurzinhalt

Following the death of his mother, 10-year-old BABA becomes one of the 2 million AIDS orphans in Malawi. He manages to find shelter in an orphanage, but when a European couple visiting the country decides to adopt him, Baba runs away.

As he roams the country on his own, Baba makes friends with eleven-year-old JO, a refugee child from Liberia. Baba and Jo team up with a gang of street kids in Blantyre, who give them food and shelter in exchange for odd jobs and errands.

Baba learns to play the drums. A popular malawian musician sees him playing in the streets, is fascinated by his talent and offers him the chance to play in his band. However, Jo steals the musician´s phone, and Baba is dragged into a seemigly endless chain of complications. Jo disappears. Baba knows his friend has been diagnosed with AIDS and is very sick. He sets out to find him. But Jo is nowhere to be found. Finally, Baba must give up his search to take part in an important benefit concert the musician has organised and in which he is featured as one of the highlights. After the concert Baba finds that Jo has dragged himself under the stage to witness his performance. The two friends are reunited, but Jo is already very weak. He falls unconcious.

Baba´s Trail is the story of Baba and Jo, of deep friendship and hope, of a child´s quest for self-determination and of his courage to challenge the circumstances of a life which offers no more than the constant struggle for survival.
