1979. Carole and Jérôme are twenty years old and set out on a journey for Odessa, behind the Iron Curtain. They are cousins and pretend that they are engaged to each other. During the day, they visit monuments and museums, like any normal tourist. At night, they sneak off from their tour party and secretly meet with refusniks and Jews harassed by the Soviet regime because they wanted to leave the country. They discover an unfamiliar, brutal and absurd world. While Carole is driven by commitment and a taste for risk, for Jérôme the real motivation behind the trip is Carole.
